Workload Policy

(Pending DSAS approval March 2, 2026)

Founded in 2025, the Institute for Spatial History Innovation (ISHI) at the University of Pittsburgh is an interdisciplinary center to research, create, link, publish, and disseminate information about the global places, regions, and spatial networks where people have made meaning throughout time.

Faculty members contribute to ISHI through various service roles, such as serving on the Institute’s advisory board or other ad hoc committees, reviewing applications, and participating as discussants or presenters at ISHI-sponsored events.

To ensure equitable recognition of this work, ISHI has established a point structure that reflects the scope and impact of each type of service. Each point reflects three hours of labor. We will share the following information with the faculty members who contribute to ISHI so that they can convey it to their department chairs:

  • ISHI Advisory Board (elected for two years in early fall): 1 point per year
  • Review Committees (student worker or intern hiring, working groups, grants): .5 points per application
  • Events
    • Discussant, Moderator, or Presenter: 2 points
    • Organizer: up to 5 points
    • Ad hoc Committee: up to 5 points

During an implementation phase, we will assess this policy and adjust as needed.
