Institute for Spatial History Innovation

Founded in 2025, the Institute for Spatial History Innovation (ISHI) at the University of Pittsburgh is an interdisciplinary center to research, create, link, publish, and disseminate information about the global places, regions, and spatial networks where people have made meaning throughout time. ISHI also develops digital tools and infrastructure that facilitate this work. ISHI is the home of the World Historical Gazetteer (whgazetteer.org), a digital platform that supports collaborative scholarship and teaching about historic places.
